Every year on March 8th, International Women’s Day is recognised across the world to celebrate the achievements of women throughout all areas of life. Women make up around 60% of the workforce at Direct House, and we are extremely appreciative of every one of them.

The theme for International Women’s Day 2023 is #EmbraceEquity, which aims to get the world talking about “why equal opportunities aren’t enough”. Find out more about why this theme was chosen for this year here.

To celebrate this important day, we have asked our very own Yasmin Mia to outline her career achievements, what it means to be a woman in 2023 and any advice for other women looking to have a career in the Legal sector.

What is your current job role at DCB Legal?

I am a Director at DCB Legal and a qualified solicitor with 13 years in practice. As part of my role, I oversee the risk and compliance as Compliance Officer for DCB Legal, dealing with High Court enforcement claims.

What has the journey looked like for you getting to your role as Director?

I started at DCBL as the in-house solicitor before co-founding DCB Legal in June 2017.

Has this been something you have always wanted to do?

Yes, I have always wanted to be a lawyer! From the early days of shadowing Counsel at the Old Bailey in London to representing high-profile commercial clients as a newly qualified solicitor.

Have there been any challenges in the lead-up to being in your current role?

I would have to say that my days as a Trainee Solicitor were my biggest challenge throughout my early career. This included attending 2-week trials at the drop of a hat notice, taking statements for clients at 6AM and travelling across the country to attend on litigated cases.

It proved I have true grit, resilience and the flexibility to adapt to any situation.

What has been your greatest achievement throughout your career?

My greatest achievement has been maintaining my practice certificate for 13 years with the integrity and professionalism that being a member of the Law Society requires.

As a woman in 2023, what would you say to your younger self?

I would say, go for it! Every challenge is a part of your growth and an opportunity to use the life experience later.

What advice would you give a woman looking to enter the Debt/High Court Enforcement or Legal industry?

Debt recovery and High Court enforcement – although it may seem like a niche area, there is so much variety!

Legal industry – go and get exposure to different aspects; it will give you the insight to help define your career path.

Lastly, what does International Women’s Day mean to you?

It celebrates all the qualities of being a woman; we should be celebrated for being the sharp, brilliant, multi-tasking and talented individuals we truly are!
