DCBL’s Accounts Associate Alex Howe has been selected as the Reserve Team Captain for the Scotland National Wheelchair Rugby Team, marking a proud milestone in his 10 year long journey in the sport.
Alex also Captains the Widnes Vikings Wheelchair Rugby Team, sponsored by DCBL, he showcased his talents while representing Scotland during the international fixture scoring two tries against Ireland.
“It’s an incredible opportunity,” said Alex. “The standard of play at the international level is fantastic, and training alongside some of the best players in the country really pushes you to improve. I’ve already been able to bring some of what I learned at Scotland’s training camp back to our sessions with the Widnes Vikings.”
Alex’s journey began unexpectedly over ten years ago when he tried wheelchair rugby at school. Mersey Storm, the predecessor to the Widnes Vikings wheelchair team, trained in his high school sports hall. A spontaneous decision to jump into a chair while waiting for the gym to open sparked a passion that has lasted ever since.
“I jumped into a chair one day and found it was just really fun,” Alex recalled. “That was over ten years ago, and I’ve been hooked ever since.”
Since then, Alex has witnessed the sport’s dramatic growth, especially following the televised 2021 World Cup in England.
“Interest has exploded,” he said. “There’s been a huge influx of players, and dozens of new clubs have sprung up. With Australia hosting the next World Cup, I think the sport is only going to keep growing.”
Wheelchair rugby is renowned for its inclusivity, intensity, and teamwork. Alex is one of many able-bodied players who compete in the sport, helping to challenge perceptions and broaden participation.
“A lot of people hear the word ‘wheelchair’ and assume it’s not for them,” Alex explained. “But once they try it, they realise how fast, physical, and enjoyable it is. It’s a brilliant sport for anyone.”
Balancing his athletic commitments with his professional role at DCBL, Alex credits the company’s support and flexible working arrangements for helping him manage both.
“DCBL has been really supportive. Being able to adjust my hours when travelling for training or games has made a big difference. It’s great to work for a company that also backs the sport and wider community through their sponsorship of the Widnes Vikings.”
As proud stadium sponsors, DCBL proudly supports the Widnes Vikings’ Men’s, Women’s, LDSL, and Wheelchair Rugby Teams.
Darren Connor, managing director said:
“Alex’s national team selection is a brilliant achievement and something we’re all proud of. He embodies teamwork, determination, and excellence—the same qualities we value in our business. Supporting our team inside and outside of the workplace is important to us.
Alex has his eyes on the future, with the Celtic Cup approaching in May and the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, Alex remains focused on staying fit and ready for selection—both for Scotland and the Widnes Vikings.
